When should Ontario drivers install winter tires?
Plan your winter tire change around the conditions you will drive in, rather than waiting for the first heavy snowfall. For Kitchener-Waterloo commuters, that means looking at early-morning temperatures, your existing tire type and the time needed to confirm a suitable set.
Use temperature as a planning signal
The familiar 7°C guideline is a useful prompt to prepare, not a switch that makes every tire unsafe at one exact temperature. Transport Canada explains that summer and all-season tire rubber loses flexibility as temperatures fall below that range. Watch the conditions during your commute, especially if you leave before sunrise or return late at night.
A warm afternoon does not tell you what your tires will face at 6 a.m. Equally, ordering a package in September does not mean it must be installed that day. Confirm the fitment and availability first, then arrange an installation date that suits your driving and the forecast.
Give ordering and installation separate dates
There are two decisions: securing the correct equipment and deciding when to fit it. Wheel diameter, brake clearance and tire-pressure sensors can affect the package, so a vehicle-specific quote is worth arranging before you urgently need the car.
Send the year, exact model, trim and current tire sizes. Mention a brake upgrade, aftermarket wheels or a previous winter setup. Check an existing winter set before booking a swap
Look at the condition of all four tires and wheels before the installation date. Uneven wear, visible cracking, damage or a tire that regularly loses pressure deserves inspection. Photograph the tire-size markings and any damage if you are unsure what you have.
Tread condition matters as well as age. Transport Canada advises against using tires worn close to 4 mm on snow-covered roads. Have questionable tires assessed before deciding that last winter’s set is ready for another season. Bring the wheel bolts or nuts and locking-wheel key if they belong to that setup.

Hardware is an additional $75 per package where required; optional TPMS is $340 per package. Prices are in Canadian dollars before tax, with the final specification and total confirmed before ordering.
