The bad news: ignoring them almost always makes the repair more expensive. Steady vs. Flashing: Know the Difference

The first thing to check is whether the light is steady or flashing. A steady check engine light means a fault has been detected and needs attention, but it's generally safe to drive to a qualified shop. Don't ignore it for weeks — but you don't need to pull over.

A flashing check engine light is a different story. Flashing means the engine is misfiring severely enough that unburnt fuel is reaching the catalytic converter, which can damage it within minutes — and a catalytic converter replacement is easily one of the most expensive single repairs on an Audi. If your light is flashing: reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration, and get to a shop as soon as possible.

The Most Common Audi Check Engine Light Causes

1. Ignition Coils and Spark Plugs

The single most common trigger on Audi's 2.0T and 3.0T engines. Audi uses an individual ignition coil per cylinder, and they have a well-documented wear pattern — especially on the EA888 engine in the A4, A5, Q5, and A3. The fix is straightforward, and because coils and plugs wear at similar rates, replacing them as a set usually makes the most sense.

2. Oxygen Sensor Faults

Audi engines use multiple oxygen sensors to monitor the exhaust before and after the catalytic converter. As they age — typically past 120,000–160,000 km — they degrade and skew the fuel mixture rich or lean. Common codes are P0171 (too lean) and P0172 (too rich). A worn sensor hurts fuel economy long before it causes damage, so this is a repair that pays for itself at the pump.

3. Carbon Buildup on Intake Valves

Virtually every Audi from 2008 onward uses direct injection, and direct-injection engines build carbon on the intake valves — fuel no longer washes over the valves to keep them clean, while oil vapour from the PCV system slowly coats them in hard deposits. The result: rough idle, down-on-power feel, poor economy, and eventually misfire codes. The proper fix is walnut blasting — crushed walnut shell blasted at the valves under pressure, removing carbon without harming the metal. On direct-injection Audis we treat it as a maintenance item roughly every 60,000–80,000 km.

4. Timing Chain Stretch

On the 2.0T TSI and 3.0T engines, a stretching timing chain or failing tensioner will set camshaft/crankshaft correlation codes (P0016, P0017) — often with a rattle on cold start. 5. Oil Consumption Catching Up With You

Certain 2.0T engines are known for burning oil, and when the level drops far enough — or fouled plugs and sensors follow — the check engine light is often the first formal warning. 6. EVAP Leaks — Including the Gas Cap

The evaporative emissions system keeps fuel vapour sealed in the tank. A loose or worn gas cap is the most common and cheapest cause of an EVAP code — tighten or replace it and the light often clears itself over a few drive cycles. But EVAP codes can also point to cracked canisters, leaking purge valves, or perished hoses, and only a smoke test pinpoints the leak.

7. The EPC Light

Audi owners sometimes see the EPC (Electronic Power Control) warning alongside or instead of the check engine light. EPC relates to the throttle and engine management system — common triggers include a faulty throttle body, a failing brake light switch, or accelerator pedal sensor wiring. Because the car may limit engine power as a protective measure, an EPC light should always be diagnosed promptly.

Why a Generic Code Reader Isn't Enough for an Audi

A cheap Bluetooth code reader will show you a generic code like P0300 — but it can't tell you why the misfire is happening. Audi's engine management stores manufacturer-specific fault codes, freeze-frame data capturing the exact conditions when the fault occurred, and adaptation values that reveal whether you're looking at a one-off glitch or a developing problem.
