McLaren 570S Service. The supercar without the supercar bills.
Repair / Performance / Calibration / Bespoke
Independent 570S specialists at Thorney Motorsport Toronto. Door hinges, IRIS, paint corrosion, gearbox positioning faults, banjo-bolt brake recall — every documented issue on the platform, handled to OE spec at a fraction of the dealer's bill.
The 570S is the Sports Series flagship — and the most attainable real supercar in the McLaren lineup.
Launched in 2015 as McLaren's assault on the supercar mid-market, the 570S put the carbon Monocell II tub, twin-turbo M838T, and SSG transmission in reach of buyers who couldn't justify a 650S. Ten years on, it's a remarkably honest used buy — but it's also a McLaren, with a McLaren's checklist of platform-specific items to know before you hand over a deposit.
The good news: the 570S is one of the best-supported independent McLaren platforms anywhere. The known faults — hinges, paint, IRIS, gearbox positioning fault, the early-build brake banjo-bolt recall — all have known fixes that we've done many times over. Owning a 570S should be fun. It shouldn't be financially terrifying.
What We See
570S common issues. Documented, not guessed.
The McLaren 570S is a great driver’s car — and like every modern McLaren, it has a handful of items worth knowing about. The list below blends what owners have documented in the McLarenLife community, what Thorney Motorsport UK has written up in their workshop articles, and what we see at the shop. None of it should put you off the car. These are simply the items every current and prospective 570S owner should keep an eye on.
01
Cracking aluminum door hinges
The single most-documented 570S issue. OEM cast aluminum hinges develop stress cracks at the casting webbing near the upper mount. Eventually a fracture propagates and the door drops on its lower hinge. McLaren switched to the stronger GT-spec hinge in later production but earlier cars are still in the field.
Inspect both hinges on every PPI — non-negotiable
McLaren-only replacement part
Often retrofitted with the GT-style stronger hinge when the original is replaced
02
Gearbox even-gears-only fault (SSG positioning)
A misplaced internal locating screw in the SSG transmission causes the gearbox to select only even-numbered gears. McLaren's fix is to rectify the positioning and flush the box — a known repair, not a transmission replacement.
Drive 1st through 7th, both auto and manual, on every PPI
Distinct from clutch-pack wear and from TCU adaptation
Known repair, not a six-figure transmission
03
Aluminum panel paint blistering / corrosion
Doors, front and rear wings, engine cover. Inadequate factory surface prep under the paint allows moisture-driven corrosion to lift the paint from underneath. Bubbling appears at panel edges first.
Front wing edges first, then door bottoms
Eligible under McLaren cosmetic warranty when in date
Out-of-warranty: panel replacement is the only McLaren remedy
04
IRIS infotainment freezing / boot-loop
Same head-unit family used across the Sports Series. Cold-boot failures, ghost touches, climate controls dropping out. Soft reset works some of the time; hard failure is a full head-unit replacement.
Always cold-boot the unit at PPI from completely off
Confirm latest software updates applied
Replacement is a real bill out of warranty
05
Brake banjo-bolt recall (NHTSA)
Faulty supplier banjo bolt could cause uneven brake force; recalled limited VINs including some 570S units. Pull VIN against the recall and confirm work was done.
VIN check on every PPI
Dealer-only remedy
Documented in McLaren’s recall record
06
Fuel rail / injector ticking, misfires
Some early 570S cars exhibit a ticking traced to fuel rail and injector assemblies; in a small number of cases, replacement is needed. Caught early in PPI to avoid surprise.
Distinguishable from normal injector noise on cold start
Sometimes paired with intermittent CEL
Repair path is documented
07
Windscreen stress fractures (less acute than 600LT, but present)
A handful of 570S cars have shown windscreen stress fractures — less endemic than the 600LT but documented. Inspect for star fractures with no impact point as part of every PPI.
Star pattern with no central impact point = stress, not stone
Glass typically excluded from extended warranty
Replacement is McLaren-only
08
Door window switch water ingress
Switches become intermittent from water entering via the door card. Window relearn often resolves; sometimes the switch unit needs replacement.
Test all four switches inside and out
Cars left outdoors in Ontario weather are higher-risk
Inexpensive when caught early
Pre-Purchase Inspection
The 570S PPI checklist we’d want done on our own car.
Buying a McLaren 570S without an independent PPI from a specialist is buying problems you can’t see. The list below is what we work through on every 570S that comes through the shop for a PPI.
Door hinge inspection
Lift each door under bright light, inspect both castings for hairline cracks at the upper casting webbing. Hinge replacement on a 570S is a real bill; spotting it on PPI gives you negotiating leverage.
Full gearbox drive
Drive 1st through 7th, in both auto and manual modes, including low-speed crawl and a meaningful pull. The even-gears-only fault shows up under load, not necessarily at idle.
IRIS cold boot
Power down completely, then boot. Confirm clean cold boot, working DAB or Bluetooth, no ghost touches, climate panel responsive. Worth a five-minute test.
Windscreen under raking light
Inspect for hairline star fractures. A star with no central impact point is stress-cracked, not stone-chipped, and predicts a near-term replacement bill.
Aluminum panel edges
Doors, front/rear wings, engine cover. Look for bubbling under raking light. Eligible for McLaren cosmetic warranty if in date.
Banjo-bolt recall VIN check
Pull VIN against the NHTSA banjo-bolt recall. Confirm work was completed at McLaren — if not, route the car to a McLaren dealer to finish before purchase.
Door window switches
Cycle every switch inside and out, both auto-up and auto-down. Frameless glass relearn procedure may be needed if the switches have recently been replaced.
Underbody and lift
Most 570S cars don’t have factory lift; underbody scrape evidence is common. If lift is fitted, confirm it raises and holds.
Service history
McLaren or qualified independent only. Confirm coolant service with clamp replacement was actually done, not just “topped up.”
Toronto-area PPIs by appointment. Enclosed transport coordinated where required.
Service Schedule
570S service schedule. Straight from Thorney.
This is the published Thorney Motorsport McLaren service schedule, used worldwide by every TMS International dealer including Thorney Motorsport Toronto. Each yearly service builds on the core oil-and-filter — the heavier years add brake fluid, cabin filter, air filters; year 5 adds coolant; year 10 is the big one. After year 10 the schedule starts again.

Labour varies by model
* On the 6th year "charcoal fuel filter" item: McLaren recommends replacement of the charcoal fuel filter on Sports Series models at the 6th-year service, which requires removing the fuel tank — a labour-intensive job. The 570S is Sports Series and is therefore on this recommendation. Thorney’s position — and ours — is that McLaren’s 6-year recommendation is excessive. The filter supplier’s own recommendation is 100,000–160,000 km. We only replace if there’s a fuel smell after brimming the tank or starting issues after a fill-up. An informed owner is the best owner.
Schedule above is published by Thorney Motorsport UK — see the McLaren Service Schedule on their site for the source. Every TMS International dealer, including Thorney Motorsport Toronto, follows this schedule. Subtle differences exist for the 765LT, 675LT, 600LT and GT but are minor and not worth listing separately. The Senna, P1 and F1 are not covered by this schedule.
Affordable McLaren Ownership
Own the car. Lose the anxiety.
Modern McLarens have a reputation for intimidating service bills that keeps some prospective owners away from one of the great driving cars of our era. The honest truth is that the platform is well-understood. The known issues have known fixes. A specialist who actually knows the cars can keep one running properly for materially less than the reputation implies — and that’s exactly what we’re here for.
i
Real solutions for the known faults
Every item on the common-issues list above has a fix we’ve done many times over. Known parts, known procedures, fair labour. Owning a 570S does not have to mean a six-figure parts catalogue.
ii
OE-grade work at independent rates
We run McLaren-grade diagnostic software, OE service procedures, and genuine McLaren parts where they matter. The savings come from operating as a focused independent specialist — not from cutting corners on the work itself. Same quality outcome at a price that makes regular service realistic instead of dreaded.
iii
Thorney UK platform depth
Thorney Motorsport in the UK has been the world’s leading independent McLaren house for fifteen-plus years. Their workshop articles on accumulator failure, bodywork corrosion, and DCT seal repair are the reference for the entire independent McLaren community worldwide. Toronto operates as the Canadian arm.
iv
Quoted before we start. Every time.
You see the bill before we touch the car. Parts source identified (OE, OE-equivalent, or Thorney-developed). No surprise invoices, no "we’ll see how long it takes" labour. Predictable cost is half the affordability story.
v
Factory warranty stays intact
Canadian consumer law protects your right to service your McLaren at a qualified independent shop without affecting factory warranty, provided the work meets manufacturer specification and is documented. We keep a complete dealer-standard digital service record for every car that passes through.
vi
The car you bought for the reason you bought it
The 570S is a thrilling car. It deserves to be driven. We’re here to make sure cost-of-ownership concerns never become the reason yours sits in the garage. Annual service, the occasional repair, a PPI before your next McLaren — that’s the whole picture, and it’s a manageable one.
Other McLaren Models
We cover every modern McLaren. Pick your platform.
Each model has its own page covering platform-specific common issues, PPI red flags, and the service schedule we follow. Return to the Thorney Motorsport Toronto McLaren hub for the full picture, or jump directly to a specific car.
Enclosed flatbed transport for out-of-province owners arranged on request. Roadside-assistance services that aren’t exotic-trained should never load a McLaren.
