Do AWD cars need winter tires? A guide for quattro, xDrive and 4MATIC owners
Yes—an AWD car still needs tires suited to winter conditions. Audi quattro, BMW xDrive and Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC can help the car put power down, but the tires still provide its grip on the road. Confident acceleration is not proof that it will stop or turn equally well.
Starting, steering and stopping are different jobs
AWD distributes drive to more wheels, which can help the vehicle move away on a slippery surface. It does not make the rubber compound or tread pattern more suitable for snow and ice. Bridgestone’s drivetrain guidance highlights the difference between getting moving and the traction needed for braking and turning.
That distinction matters when a car feels composed leaving a snowy driveway. A successful launch tells you little about the next junction or a sudden stop. Tires, road conditions, speed and following distance still determine the margin available.
Use a matched winter setup
Transport Canada recommends winter tires at all wheel positions for cold, snowy or icy driving. Fitting winter tires only to one axle can leave the car with an uneven balance of grip. An AWD badge does not remove the need to check the whole set.
For a quattro, xDrive or 4MATIC vehicle, confirm the intended front and rear tire combination for that exact model. Differences in size, construction and wear should be assessed against vehicle requirements. Avoid choosing an arbitrary rolling-circumference tolerance from a forum and applying it to every AWD system.
Do winter tires have to come on separate wheels?
A dedicated wheel set is one way to run winter tires, not a requirement for every owner. It can make seasonal changes simpler and allow you to keep your other set assembled. Reusing suitable wheels may also be possible, subject to the correct tire fitment and the cost of seasonal mounting.
Compare the full costs and practicalities of each route: wheels, tires, required hardware, sensors, mounting and your storage arrangement. A package should solve those questions for your vehicle rather than simply add another set of wheels.
Start with the right brand package
Use the Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz winter package page to browse applications. Tell us the year, exact model and trim, plus any upgraded brakes or other fitment changes.
Our listed packages include four tires, four wheels, mounting, balancing and installation. Hardware is $75 extra per package where required; optional TPMS is $340 per package. Prices are in CAD before tax, and the final fitment and total are confirmed before ordering.
Choose around the journeys you make
An urban commute, rural road and long highway trip can expose the same AWD car to very different winter conditions. Tell us where and when you drive and what you want to improve about your current setup. That gives the quote more context than the badge alone.
